Jordan Spieth has never had to withdraw from a start at some competitive golf level in his life, so much less PGA Tour.

There is a first time for everything.

After making 297 just starting at events that he was scheduled to play, Spieth withdrew from this week’s Traveler’s Championship at TPC River Highlands due to a neck injury.

“I’ve never withdrawn from an event ever, anywhere at any level, so I didn’t really know what to do,” Spieth said journalists after making his decision via Yahoo Sports. “It just got too much. … Don’t know it’s unfortunate. I’ve done everything well and I think it was just very random.”

Spieth believes he was sleeping in an unusual position on Wednesday night and the pain began to hit him during exercise shots in the field.

His usual warming routine was thrown off and Spieth left the range early to receive treatment on his neck. But it didn’t work.

He tested things on the field, but he seemed to have pain with every turn he was doing. After 12 holes, Spieth called it ending.

He knocked out on the 13th hole, but after releasing a painful cries on the tee box, he knew it was time to stop pushing it. Spieth’s round did not go well. He was 5-over for the tournament at the time.

“When I was out there, I couldn’t, I just didn’t move very well, and then it just got worse,” he explained. “I just wanted to try to see if I could somehow get through on evenly. It is a strange situation with an elevated event and no carved and important points and things.

“I hit my tee shot at 13, and it legitimately hurt really. … I was like, ‘it will only get worse to finish the round and it’s not worth it.’ I thought that was the time.

The 31-year-old three-time big winner and 13-time PGA Tour Victor have been searching for a win on tour since 2022. This season he has managed four top 10 finishes, but he has not required a trophy.

As of Thursday, Spieth was 37. In the FedEx Cup position this season.
