Rawalpindi:
At the forefront of the Monsun season, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has completed Desilting of Nullah Leh, an important flood tract in Rawalpindi.
The project, launched on May 8 with heavy machinery and labor, recently completed and cost RS80 million, funded by the Punjab government.
The effort aims to ensure that greater water flow under the monsoon can pass through the Nullah Leh to the Soan River without causing flooding of cities. Seven machines remain stationed along the channel’s banks until September as a precautionary measure.
The 8 -kilometer duct and 15 adjacent sewer drain in Rawalpindi were cleared for silt, with efforts focused on increasing depth, removal of blockages near bridges and charcoal and secured uninterrupted water flow.
The project reviewed two third-party inspections of the secretary of housing and the commissioner’s team with a third inspection planned by the Federal Flood Commission.
WASA also inspected all its monsoon -related machines and launched a simultaneous cleaning operation for 15 city drains, which is expected to be completed by June 30. In addition, it is working to clean and cover all open manholes, with a six hour response time for complaint resolution.
Preparations for the monsoon also include the establishment of a control room at the WASA headquarters and five emergency camps all over the city.
