Avast has introduced a new fraud protection feature that promised real-time defense against the emergence of phishing, online-fraud and AI-assisted deception
Avast Scam Guardian, integrated into the company’s existing free antivirus platform, seems to be tackling what Avast describes as an “increasingly sophisticated trussel landscape.”
Avast Scam Guardian is designed to detect scam trials across different digital channels, including sites, messages and e emails, using AI to analyze patterns in content and user interaction, marking suspicious activity in real time.
A response to alarming scam -trends
A paid version, Scam Guardian Pro, is expected later in the year, promising additional layers of protection, including AI-driven defense against scam calls and text messages.
To use Avast Scam Guardian, users simply need to install or update to the latest version of Avast Free Antivirus, where the tool is now integrated.
Once installed, Scam Guardian operates in the background, scanning sites, emails and messages to known scam patterns and suspicious behavior using AI models trained on threats in the real world.
The system warns users in real time if it detects a potential scam. The free version does not require any special setup and is by default active.
The time of this release corresponds to alarming figures from Avast’s threat report from Q1/2025, which claims that the violated personal items increased by 186% in the first quarter alone, while phishing fraud increased with an even more dramatic 466% compared to the previous quarter.
In the UK, almost one of three adults has been targeted by a scam in 2025 so far with online shopping fraud, which accounts for the largest proportion of victims, followed by investment schemes and phishing attacks.
The idea of using AI to fight scams is not new; Scammers themselves have used generative tools to write compelling messages and build fake sites.
Avast claims that its system “smooths the rules of the game” by giving users the opportunity to counter these threats with their own AI defense.
