Amazon MGM Studios has announced the director of the next James Bond movie, and it’s surprised and gratifying a lot of film fans: It’s Denis Villeneuve, director of some of the best sci-fi movies like the two Dune film, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario And more.
He is very happy about it, and so is the fans. “Some of my earliest film-through memories are connected to 007,” says Villeneuve. “I grew up watching James Bond movie with my dad ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a Die-Hard Bond fan. For me he’s holy territory.”
Bond is safe in his hands, says Villeneuve. “I intend to honor the tradition and open the path to many new missions coming. This is a massive responsibility, but also incredibly exciting to me and a huge honor.”
The reaction to R/Film has been very positive, with film fans’ only real concern about being timing: Villeneuve is a very busy guy and making a bond means a longer delay before his next project.
