- New Sony Over-Ear Bluetooth headphones appear in an official database
- Possibly a successor to Sony Wh-CH520 or WH-C720N
- This is a very early leakage so a launch may not be imminent
There is no doubt that Sony’s WH-1000XM6 over-ears is a really excellent pair of headphones. But for $ 449 / £ 399 / AU $ 699 they are also a rather expensive pair of headphones. If you are looking for a sound upgrade but prefer something a little more affordable, Sony looks to prepare exactly it.
A new pair of Sony headphones is leaked and they seem to be over-ear. And that means they are probably the successor to the Sony WH-CH520 or WH-C720N self-self we can’t rule out a whole new model that we haven’t seen before.
The first of them had a launch price of $ 60 / £ 60 / AU $ 99, and the latter was $ 129 / £ 99 / AU $ 259. And both of them go a little on: two years, which is a long time in the headphone market.
Sony’s new over-ear headphones: what we know so far
As is often the case with Sony Leaks, the news comes via the Walkman blog and its access to Sony’s shipping manifesto.
These manifestations include a new model number, YY2998, which they describe as “Bluetooth headphones with head cover, 2.4 GHz ribbon, Brand: Sony … Black, Silver”. 2.4 GHz is where Bluetooth lives.
Previous leaks for another set of headphones had the model number YY2985, which is believed to be WF-1000XM6 earplugs that are expected to launch later in the year.
The headphones that are detailed in the manifesto seem to be test tests, which means this is a very early leak: The big leaks tend to be when headphones are submitted to the various certification bodies, a process that tends to happen in the very last stages before the product’s launches.
It suggests that no matter what these headphones are, we probably do not see them until the end of this year. So if you hang after a set of Sony’s but won’t wait that long, check out our guide to the best Sony headphones for all budgets.
