The United Nations: Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council to take urgent steps to resolve Kashmir, said the country’s regular representative of the UN, ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.
The comments from Ahmad came when Pakistan took over the Council’s Presidency for July. He said the many years of question about Kashmir causes serious tension between Pakistan and India.
He spoke at a packed press conference at the UN headquarters in New York and said it was time for the world to shop and not let the case collect dust.
“It is time for this (Kashmir-Dist) to be treated, and I would say that this is not just a responsibility to Pakistan-Vi is temporarily two years as a non-permanent member,” he told a crowded press conference at the UN headquarters in New York while answering a question.
“I think it is responsible for the Security Council itself, and especially the regular members, to see that they are taking certain steps to actually get their own decisions implemented,” said Ambassador Asim IFTIKHAR.
“That’s the way forward,” he added.
At the forefront of the press conference met and approved the 15-member advice program for work for July.
“Our approach is firmly rooted in the purpose and principles of the UN Charter – peaceful settlement of disputes, sovereign equality, respect for international law and multilateralism,” Ambassador Asim told Corps of Correspondents.
Pakistan, he said, will convene two signature events during his high-level debate-a high-level debate to promote international peace and security through multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes planned for July 22, and about non-OIC cooperation on July 24. Both debates will be chairman of the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar.
In addition, DPM/FM Dar will also be prescribed for the quarterly debate on Palestine on July 23.
“The debates stem from the reality that today’s crises often come out of unresolved disputes, the erosion of international obligations and the under -use of peaceful means laid out in the Charter’s Chapter VI,” the Pakistani emissary said.
“We aim to: reflect on the effectiveness of dispute resolution mechanisms; discuss obstacles to the implementation of council decisions; explore ways of improving diplomacy, mediation and technical support; and strengthening the obligations entered into the covenant for the future to prevent diplomacy and peaceful dispute.”
At Kashmir, Ambassador Asim ITIKHAR also said that all questions on the Security Council’s agenda can be discussed at all times, and the decades old dispute over the Himalayan state was on the agenda under the Indian issue in Pakistan.
The UN Security Council has stated in several decisions that among other elements, the Kashmiri people give their right to self-determination, he said.
“It is a partying dispute. It has several dimensions,” Pakistan said, and noticed its peace and safety dimension, political and legal dimension and also a human rights dimension.
“This is a question that has been unresolved. It is a cause of tension and friction between India and Pakistan. It hinders the development of friendly connections in our region. It’s time for this to be treated,” he added.
The council, he said, will remain focused on key global issues, including the situation in the Middle East and developments in Africa, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
The Security Council’s Presidency-World Body’s Power Center-is part of Pakistan’s two-year period as a non-permanent member of UNSC, which began in January 2025. The presidency rotates monthly among its 15 members in alphabetical order.
Pakistan’s previous terms of the council were in 2012–13, 2003–04, 1993–94, 1983–84, 1976–77, 1968–69 and 1952–53.
Pakistan was elected as a non-permanent member with the overwhelming support of UN membership and secured 182 votes out of 193.
