Octopus games Creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk has addressed rumors around a US-spin-off of the show.
In an interview with The Hollywood reporterhe sincerely talked about Cate Blanchett’s role as recruiting in the last scene of Octopus games Season 3.
After that, fans assumed her appearance was designed to set up an American-based spinoff series.
“I didn’t end it on that note to deliberately give way to further stories to happen. Gi-she and front man, through these characters, have been the games in Korea,” Dong-Hyuk replied.
“And because this story started with the fact that I would tackle questions about the unlimited competition and the system created in late capitalism,” he explained.
Dong-Hyuk added, “I would leave it on a note that highlights the fact that these systems, even if you come down, is not easy to dismantle the whole system-it will always repeat itself.”
“That’s why I wanted to end it with an American recruiter. And I wrote the scene that would have an effective end to the show, not to open rooms for anything else.”
However, the Korean director noted that nothing has been officially discussed with him about the US spinoff.
As it has been rumored that David Fincher will direct the series, he concluded: “I’ve always been a big fan of David Fincher’s work – from Se7en – and I’ve loved his film.”
“So if he were to create an American squid game, I think it would be very interesting to see. I would definitely click on it immediately after it was released if it happened.”
The last and third season of Octopus games was released on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
