Islamabad:
Flash flooding and heavy rain I have killed 64 people and wounded 117 in a week across the country, a government agency said Wednesday.
The highest toll was in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, with 23 dead, including 10 children, National Disaster Management Authority said.
The fourteen of the victims were swept away in a flash river in the SWAT Valley last week, local media reported.
Flash floods and homes collapsed in heavy rain killed 21 others in the eastern province of Punjab, including 11 children, the authority said.
In Sindh, 15 were killed while five people died in southwestern Balochistan.
Meanwhile, PMD on Wednesday has predicted a significant intensification of monsoon activity across the country, beginning from the evening of July 5, with widespread rain, thunderstorms and the possibility of flash flooding and urban floods in several regions.
According to Met Office, moist monsoon streams were continuously penetrating the country and are likely to strengthen over the weekend.
A western wave was also expected to approach the upper parts of Pakistan on July 6, which further improved the rainfall.
According to the regional prognosis heights, rain winds/thunderstorms are expected with spread heavily to very heavy rain from 5-10 July in several areas, including Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Swat, Dir, Malakand, Kohistan, Chitral and others.
GB regions such as Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit and Astore may also experience similar conditions from 6 to 10 July.
In Punjab and Islamabad, widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected with heavy falls from 5-10. July in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and several other districts. Southern Punjab regions, including Multan, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan, will receive rain between 06-08 July.
About Sindh and Balochistan, PMD predicts that the rain-thunderstorm is likely to be in southern and northeast Balochistan, including Loralai, Khuzdar and Lasbella from July 03-04 and again from 06 to 06 July.
Sindh regions such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Tharparkar and Succur may experience moderate rainfall during July 3-4 with chances of isolated heavy falls in southeastern parts.
According to possible influences and public counseling, tongue to very heavy rain can generate flash floods in local nullahs and streams of Murree, Galliyat, Mansshera, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Maran, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Hill Torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab, Kashmir and parts of Balochistan from night to July 05-08.
Heavy rainfall can cause flooding of cities in low -lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera and Peshawar from 06 to 06 July. (With input from AFP)
