Islamabad:
Public Accounts Committee (PAC) held a detailed discussion on the alleged scam on the RS40 billion on Wednesday.
PAC chairman Junaid Akbar, who was chairman of a meeting after a month long break, said that when the committee raises audit objections, that department fails to cooperate effectively.
In May, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government launched an investigation into the mega corruption scandal in the Kohistan district, where an estimated RS40 billion had allegedly been extinguished from the provincial treasure trove.
The account was intended for detention money by contractors for schemes of four departments, including communication and works, local authorities, irrigation and public health departments. The scandal came under intense control during a meeting in PAC, chairman of the KP Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati.
Officials from the Finance Department and the auditor’s general office admitted during the session that billions had been abused from public funds.
While an official underscore of RS24 billion had been confirmed, the PAC members expressed dissatisfaction with the explanations of financial secretary and the auditor general.
On Wednesday, the audit officials revealed that there had been an abuse of checkbook with fraud committed by three people who have now been arrested. National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is currently investigating the matter.
Auditor General revealed that despite having sent three letters to the finance department, no disciplinary act had been taken against any of their officials. The committee required complete details of the case and instructed all relevant items to be submitted.
