The Opera VPN Pro has undergone a major renewal – and it is now driven by one of the very best VPN providers out there.
The team has integrated ExpressVPN’s proprietary Lightway protocol into the service in a step that promises to deliver faster speeds, better privacy and stronger security-also to threats after quantity. The update also includes 15 more server locations, a total of 48 worldwide.
New and existing users can now enjoy the protection of the Renewed Opera VPN Pro on up to six Windows, MacOS or Android devices. Still, the service is still missing iOS support at the time of writing.

It is worth noting that the Opera VPN Pro was originally built on Nord VPN’s servers and network infrastructure as opposed to the Opera Free VPN version.
The provider told Techradar that it has now decided to cooperate with ExpressVPN for this purpose.
In a comment on the move, product marketing leader, privacy and security at Opera, Michael Tegos said: “Being an open source, independently revised protocol that regularly undergoes penetration tests to control for vulnerabilities, Lightway lies with our focus on continuing to improve VPN Pro and offer better privacy and security for our users.”
Tegos also mentions ExpressVPN’s improved speed and reliability as reasons behind the contact. He said: “[Lightway] Works especially well on mobile devices where it offers reduced latency and better battery life. Since we offer VPN Pro on both Desktop and Android, this was an important factor for us.
“Finally, Lightway’s use of ML-Kem, the NIST standard for encryption after Quantum, means it can help us with future-proof VPN Pro for our users today.”
Of crucial importance, the provider ensures that the Renewed Opera VPN Pro still never logs your activity, collects personal data or other identifiable information. An obligation that was verified with an independent no-log audit in September 2024.
How to upgrade
Unlike other VPN services, the Opera VPN Pro does not come as an independent app, but is integrated directly into the opera rowser.

On Desktop devices (MacOS and Windows), the service automatically upgrades to the new version the next time you start your web browser. On Android, you will receive a message to upgrade your browser app and enjoy the Opera’s Renewed VPN Pro.
