If it was up to President Donald Trump, Washington’s football team would never have changed its name.
The NFL team is currently attending the Washington commanders, but the old name, Redskins, is what Trump says he would have kept it as if he owned the organization.
“Well, you want me to make a controversial statement? I would,” Trump said to journalists in Morristown, New Jersey on Sunday. “I wouldn’t have changed the name. But it’s theirs – it just doesn’t have the same ring for me.”

Commander -owner Josh Harris told Bret Baier about “Special Report” in April that despite his plan to bring the team back to Washington DC on the site of the old RFK Stadium, the Redskins name would not return.
“The commander’s name has actually taken on a fantastic form of element in our building,” Harris said. “So the people as certain types of players who are hard, the love football are delegated commanders and jayden [Daniels]is, for example, a commander and they are ranked.
“And you know, the business staff has come into it, and obviously we’re in a military city here. There are more military staff than anywhere else, so we are moving a little forward with the commander’s name, excited about it and not looking back.”

Although he may not have changed the name, Trump thinks a team that wins will stick to fans, no matter what. That’s exactly what Washington did last season and reached the NFC Championship game for the first time in almost three decades under the new quarterback Jayden Daniels.
“But you know that wins can make everything sound good,” Trump continued. “So if they win, suddenly sounds good. But I wouldn’t have changed the name.”
As for the new stadium, political discrepancies have surrounded the project $ 3.8 billion. Less than two months after the end of the stadium agreement, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said there were delays from the DC Council to approve the latest budget, per. Front Office Sports.
“If the Council stripes the agreements or budgeted dollars from the budget, it will kill our agreement with the commanders,” Bowser said last month with a preliminary approval of the plans that need an agreement on July 15.
Before his name comment, Trump was asked by a reporter of potentially stepping in if the deal remains appalling.

“Well, we’ll see what happens,” he replied. “I’ve looked at the deal and I don’t blame them. It’s a very important piece of property, it’s a fantastic piece of property. So we’ll see. If I can help them I would do it.
“Ultimately we control it [land]. The federal government eventually controls it, so we get to see what happens. I saw the plans, I saw the stadium. The owner is a very, very successful and very good man. I know him a little. It would be nice for the NFL to be there. I can tell you. If they want to negotiate a little hard it’s ok with me. “
The reason behind Washington, which changes its name to commanders, stems from the broad criticisms of Redskins, which are offensive to Native Americans.
The team ended up giving up the name in the wake of the George Floyd protests and called himself “Washington Football Team” until a major rebrand for command came in 2022.
There is still a large quota who thinks the name and logo should return to the historic franchise, including Senator Steve Daines, R-Mont., Who said he would show support for the deal to bring a new stadium to the old place on condition that the team and NFL would honor the old Redskins logo.
“The irony that they canceled Native American culture when the DEI movement went far too far,” said Daines in November 2024. “This honors a Blackfeet chief born in Montana. He is very much considered. The black food tribe in Montana, their current chairman and tribal government signed a letter in strong support to bring the logo back.

“We have good discussions with the NFL and with the commanders. There is good faith in negotiations in the future that will allow this logo to be used again. Perhaps the revenue that goes to a foundation that can help native Americans in sports and so on. We are making good progress and based on the good trial negotiations, I made a decision to support this bill in the committee.”
Harris told Baier that he hopes the construction will start on site in 2027 and opening day would have a target for 2030.
