PMD warns of heavy monsoon rain, flooding risks

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a high alarm as heavy monsoon rain continues to beat large parts of the country warning of further intense rainfall through July 10, which can trigger floods, urban areas and flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

According to PMD forecasts, northern and northeast regions, including Murree, Galliyat, SWAT, Kohistan, Chitral, Abbottabad and Mansshera, stand an increased risk of flooding of flash due to rising water levels in local streams.

In southern Balochistan, districts such as Barkhan, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Kalat and Turkat were able to experience dangerous runoff conditions and floods due to persistent rainfall.

City centers including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera and Peshawar, are on duty on flooding of cities, especially in low -lying zones.

Commuters and residents are advised to limit non-essential travel and ensure the availability of emergencies.

PMD also raised concerns about landslides and mud lids in the hilly and mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir, which can lead to road closures and travel disorders.

Local authorities across affected regions have been invited to remain in high alarm and activate rapid response and evacuation plans where needed.

The current weather system is part of the ongoing Monsun season, which has already resulted in considerable rainfall over the past 24 hours.

Sheikhupura and Balakot registered 48 mm and 40 mm rain respectively, while several districts in Punjab, KP and Kashmir received moderately to heavy showers.

With more expected rainfall over the next 48 hours, PMD repeated that conditions remain critical and called on the public to remain vigilant, follow official guidance and take preventative measures to ensure security.
