15 feared missing as flash rivers sweep through Babusar

Serious rain and flash floods have caused destruction in Gilgit-Baltistan, where 10 to 15 people have been reported missing after being swept away by flooding water in the Babusar area, Faizullah Firaq spokesman for the Gilgit-Baltist government spokesman on Wednesday.

The government has issued a strong advisory call for tourists to avoid traveling to the region for now.

He added that all routes to Naran and Kaghan are currently closed, while Karakoram Highway was blocked at two points, leaving scores of travelers stranded in different places. However, the Silk Road remains open to small vehicles, and the restoration work up to Bisham progresses quickly, he added.

Faizullah called on the public to avoid traveling to GB until conditions are normalized. He also mentioned that GB chief minister Gulbar Khan is scheduled to visit the affected areas, especially Babusar, today to assess the situation from the first hand.

In diamer, an emergency has been declared where flash floods have already required five lives.

Previously, floods swept away over 30 vehicles and destroyed 10 to 15 of them and made seven to eight kilometers of Babusar Road unacceptable.

Four connection bridges, two mosques and more than 50 houses were also destroyed, while fiber optic and electricity lines were damaged and cut off communication. Tourists in Thak and Babusar therefore lost contact with their families.

Across Pakistan, widespread monsoon activity is driven by a seasonal low over the Northwest Balochistan and humid currents from the Arabian Sea. A Western wave also affects the top regions of the country, bringing unstable conditions and an increased risk of flash flooding, landslide and infrastructure damage.

Urban flood is also a problem in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Okara, Nowshera and Peshawar, where heavy rainfall is likely to overwhelm drainage systems, Met Office warned.

Local authorities monitor low -lying areas for potential urban areas, especially as drainage systems remain under pressure from increased humidity levels and seasonal runoff.

Karachi harnesses for thunderstorms, rain

Karachi is likely to face thunderstorms accompanied by rain when PMD issued a new warning to parts of Sindh and predicted “partially cloudy thunderstorm rain” in the port city on Wednesday.

Sunny weather is expected on Thursday without rain predicted, while Friday can see partially cloudy sky without rainfall. Coastal areas such as THATTA can also witness light showers, while hot and humid conditions will continue across the southern Sindh.

Land Circuit Notices for Mountain Regions

In mountainous regions of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the threat of landslides and mud glider is still high, which increases the risk of closures and transport disorders. PMD officials have warned against non-essential trips in these areas during the expected period.

In Kashmir, Muzaffarabad received 49 mm and Kotli 16 mm. KP then moderate rainfall with 31 mm in cinnamon and 26 mm in balakot. In GB, Back Rote recorded 9 mm rain.
