- Inc Ransom recently added dollar tree to his data covering site
- Dollar Tree replied by saying that the data belonged to 99 cents only
- 99 cents is only a discount dealer who declared bankruptcy in 2024
Hackers claim to have violated dollar tree and stole its sensitive files, but the discount dealer giant says it has never suffered an attack and the data waving around the dark net does not belong.
A ransomware operation known as Inc Ransom recently added dollar tree to his data leakage page, claiming it stole 1.2 terabytes of sensitive and personal data that threatened to release them unless a ransom is paid. The group provided a sample of the stolen data, including pass scans, and also cited a press release on dollar tree, announcing the acquisition of 99 cents only leases.
And there’s rubbing – Dollar Tree says the data actually only belongs to 99 cents – a completely different discount shopping chain.
99 cents only data was not acquired
99 cents first declared bankruptcy in April 2024 with reference to financial stress from inflation, pandemic effects, theft/shrinkage and fierce competition. It closed all 371 stores in mid -2024 after liquidation, and Dollar Tree acquired rights to 170 previous leasing contracts along with its North American IP and some equipment in the store.
Dollar Tree recycled many of these leasing contracts and opened it as its own stores later that year.
A spokesperson for the discount dealer said they were aware of the requirements for data theft, but emphasized that it was 99 cents that were only hit.
“The files referred to in these claims appear to be involved earlier 99 cents only employees,” the spokesman said. “Dollar Tree’s engagement with 99 cents only stores are related to the purchase of selected rights to real estate after their closure.”
“We have not acquired their business unit, systems/networks or data. Any claim of Dollar Tree’s commitment is inaccurate.”
As 99 cents are only shut down, its E emails and phone numbers are reduced, making it impossible to ask for a statement or comment. Dollar Tree, on the other hand, is one of the most successful businesses in its industry with more than $ 17.6 billion in sales last year.
