Islamabad:
National Emergency’s Operation Center (NEOC) in NDMA has released a fresh flood alarm, considering an intensified monsoon system affecting upper and central regions of Pakistan from 5-8. August.
The alarm follows the combined influence of penetrating monsoon streams and a western trough over northern Pakistan, which is expected to result in spread heavy rain during this period.
Increased influx is expected in all major rivers, especially Indus, Chenab and Ravi, with nullahs of Ravi and Chenab, which probably reach up to medium -sized flood levels. Tarbela, Guddu and SUKKUR barriers are currently at low flood stage, but still rain may push chashma and taunsa toward low flood levels.
River Chenab at Marala is expected to reach low flooding, while the river Jhelum upstream of the short pond along with its side elves can achieve medium streams. River Kabul in Nowshera and River Swat and Panjkora with their associated streams and Nullahs are also probably swollen due to persistent rainfall in their drainage areas.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, power networks in districts Hunza, Shigar and Ghande may see a significant increase in the water level with the potential for localized flash flooding in side elves. Current storage levels for larger reservoirs show Tarbela of 94% and MONTA of 61%, with further influx expected.
NDMA encourages residents who live near rivers, streams and nullahs to remain vigilant for sudden increases in the water level, especially at night and during periods of intense rainfall. The public is advised to keep up to date through official flood warnings via TV, radio, mobile alarms and Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App.
