Lahore:

With monsoon activity intensified over Pakistan, the affected authorities have issued fresh warnings and taken precautions as flooding risks, especially in Punjab and parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Despite the active monsoon, water flow remains in larger rivers – including Indus in Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa – within normal levels, as well as side elves of Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej.

The Tarbela Dam is currently 96% full, Mangla Dam is 62% capacity, and Indian reservoirs are reportedly with 56% capacity, according to PDMA data.

Indus River System Authority (IRSA) confirmed that emissions on Tarbela Dam were opened at 1 p.m. 23:30 Wednesday night. The release was asked for the damn’s almost full status and expected rain in the drainage areas throughout August.

Release emissions may raise water discharge to 240,000 CUSERCS, which potentially increases river levels downstream. According to PDMA, the 2025 -Monsun season has so far resulted in 164 fatalities, 582 injuries, damage to 216 homes and the loss of 121 pets.

Flood Forecast Division has reported a low-level flood at Guddu and Sukkur barriers on the Indus River, although the river stays within its canal boundaries on other major control points.

The meteorological department has also warned of potential landslides in the northern areas, including K-PS districts in Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan and Abbottabad as well as Murree, Galiyat, GB and AJK.

Rising water levels in seasonal streams and nullahs can disrupt traffic and pose security risks, especially in mountainous areas.
