- Apple is reportedly working on a mini-led studio display scheduled in early 2026
- Its code name was found in Apple’s software code along with another that suggests two variations
- It is allegedly in its current test phase
All eyes are on Apple and its next challengers for the title Best MacBook, with rumors suggesting that the M5-powered MacBook Pro will first be launched before 2026, along with the rumor M6 with OLED RESEIGN. However, a new report to Apple suggests focusing on a new and immersive screen by the beginning of 2026.
According to MacRumors, Apple is working on Studio Display 2, which allegedly uses a mini-led backlight, based on rumors and recent finds in Apple’s software code. Its code name is J427, which was present in the software code, which macumors say Apple published earlier than intended.
Another code name, ‘J527’, was discovered by macumors who could prove to be a new pro display XDR, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously reported that this was not a priority for Apple. Instead, it can simply be another model of Studio Display 2 with a different price point and slightly different specifications.
This is not the first time Apple has used the mini-led backlight-the Liquid Retina XDR (essentially the mini-led backlight with lots of local attenuating zones for high contrast and brightness) is tech for MacBook Pro screens. I’ve only used a handful of MacBooks, but I’ve had a good experience with mini-led tech on the best gaming monitors, and it’s not surprising that Apple is allegedly going to the mini-joint backlighting for this new study display model.
The original study display was well received, but it comes up short when it comes to HDR performance, partly because of not using a Liquid Retina XDR screen. Given that this is a screen designed for creative professionals, poor HDR performance is a major disadvantage.
Therefore, it would be great to see the studio display 2 use mini-led tech for increased deep black levels, lighter white and greater contrast.
Analysis: Don’t sleep on the mini-joint over OLED … Believe me
It may seem a little overwhelming to hear that Studio Display 2 will essentially follow in MacBook’s footsteps with a mini-led backlight, given the rumors of an OLED MacBook-Redesign. Some would say that Apple should have done this with its first iteration of the screen, but here we are.
However, I would not write the mini-joint in comparison with OLED. Deeper black levels and higher update speeds make oled the clear winner but mini-led wonders are not too far after-icing Since it has the advantage of higher maximum brightness in most cases.
It is also important that this rumor monitor uses a higher update rate; The current study display has a refresh rate of 60 Hz and for a relatively expensive $ 1,599 / £ 1,499 / AU $ 2,499. Not only are other screens, including OLEDs available on the market that are cheaper, but they also have much higher update speeds, which is important for creative work.
Remember, nothing has been confirmed yet, but all signs point out that Apple fans are being processed on a new and more impressive display next year.
