Chinese mountaineer dies while scaling K2

KHAPLU:

A Chinese mountaineer died while falling into the world’s second highest top, with Pakistani rescuers waiting for Thursday in weather conditions to improve to regain her body.

Guan Jing fell down from the top of K2 on Tuesday night when she was hit by falling cliffs, Deputy Commissioner of Shigar District Arif Ahmad told AFP.

“An army aviation team is ready for the body recovery and is waiting for better weather conditions,” he said.

According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, who monitors local climbing expeditions, Guan is the fourth accident in the country’s summer climbing season.

Guan was among 30 climbers who reached the top of K2 Monday before she began her deadly descent.

“The incident took place on the Abruzzi spur between Camp I and Advanced Base Camp – a section notorious for frequent rockfalls,” the alpine club said.

At 8.611 meters (28,251 feet), K2 sits on the border with Pakistan-China 238 meters shy for world-topping Himalayan Giant Everest, but is considered more technically challenging.
