The 2026 World Cup is finally upon us, and while it marks the 23rd edition of the global tournament that takes place every four years, this edition of the event is unlike any of its predecessors.

For starters, the 2026 World Cup marks the first time the event has been hosted by three separate countries, with the United States, Canada and Mexico sharing the honors. However, the widespread hosting sites throughout North America are not the only unique factors.

The 2026 World Cup will also feature an expanded field of teams, going from the traditional 32-team field to 48. With the addition of 16 teams also comes changed group play, ways to advance and tiebreaker scenarios that will be worth watching closely throughout the tournament.

How do the teams progress out of the WC group stage?

The top two teams from each of the 12 four-team groups advance to the knockout stage. During the round-robin group stage, teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss. This is the same format we have seen in previous World Cups, however with 24 teams automatically advancing from the group stage instead of 16.

The main difference is that there will be an extra round of knockout matches, as the eight best third places from the group stage will also advance. This makes the traditional round of 16 the round of 32 as the first set of matches in the knockout round.

What are the tiebreakers for the World Cup Group Stage and third place?

With the group stage consisting of round-robin play, with each of the four teams playing the other three teams in their group once, ties are most likely to occur.

If two or more teams in a group finish with the same number of points, the following tiebreaker rules (in order) will determine which country advances:

  • Points earned from the head-to-head match
  • Total goal difference in all group matches
  • Total goals scored in all group matches
  • Fair play points — fewest yellow cards and red cards in all group matches, with yellow cards counting as -1 point, indirect red cards (two yellows) as -3 points, a straight red card as -4 points and a yellow card followed by a direct red card as -5 points.
  • Lottery

As for how eight of the final 12 teams in third place across the group stage advance to the round of 32 in the single-table, a different set of tiebreaker rules will likely need to be implemented:

  • Most points in the group stage
  • Superior goal difference
  • Most goals scored
  • Best fair play score
  • FIFA World Ranking
