The best of Super League and the best of the NRL meet on Thursday in a one-off World Club Challenge showdown that will not only anoint Hull KR or the Brisbane Broncos as rugby league’s best club team, but decide whether Great Britain and France or Australia will claim bragging rights for the next 12 months.
The Robins won the domestic treble of the Super League title, the League Leaders’ Shield and the Challenge Cup last season, but kicked off the new campaign with a shock defeat at the hands of top-flight debutants York. They started the curtain-raiser badly, as if all they had to do was screw up, but clawed their way back to lead 18-6 with half an hour to play – that’s when Mikey Lewis lost his head.
Hull KR’s talismanic half-back, who won the Rob Burrow Award for his performance in the 2025 Super League Grand Final, kicked out at Liam Harris for tripping him and was duly absolved. Willie Peters’ men went on to lose 19-18. And that shouldn’t have been the end for Lewis. A trip is an automatic red card and a ban, but the authorities have shown extreme leniency towards the 24-year-old.
That said, the last time he shared the field with an Australian team, he would have rather been somewhere else. The Kangaroos obliterated England in their own backyard in the Rugby League Ashes two months ago, with Lewis singled out for particularly vocal criticism from his own supporters.
The star of the series was Broncos fullback Reece Walsh, who previously won the Clive Churchill Medal for his man-of-the-match performance in the 2025 NRL Grand Final, although Patrick Carrigan, Gehamat Shibasaki and Kotoni Staggs also enjoyed themselves in the three-match mauling.
The previous two editions of the World Club Challenge were won by Super League teams, edging the Northern Hemisphere 15–14 on aggregate, although the timing of the clash was designed that way. The Bronx have had just one game to prepare, against Queensland Cup outfit at regional level, the Sunshine Coast Falcons, and have had to forgo the NRL pre-season.
