It has now been two decades since an American took home a major singles title.
The current roster of players is still looking for the big win, with Frances Tiafoe being the one the fans have been hoping for.
He is ranked 21st in the world, yet he enjoyed his closing run at Roland Garros last year by finishing in the quarter-finals.
He is not the one who came close to the finish line, several others have also not been able to end the twenty-year drought.
In a recent media appearance, just before the tournament started, Tiafoe speaks his mind.
He said, “It’s been nice for a long time. I think we’ve been killing. It’s a matter of us just having some guys. It’s just top-heavy, man.”
Tiafoe chimes in on American tennis, adding: “We know, you know, they’re tough at the gate. I mean, I think, you know, Fritz has been top ten for a lot of years.
“Ben’s the cracker in there. He’s kind of solidified himself as a top ten guy. I mean, I’ve been top 20 most of the years the last four years. Tommy, too. He’s flirted in and out, so.”
Tiafoe explains, “We have Korda, I mean, you know, if he’s healthy, you know, he’s always, again, top 20.
“But it’s his way of putting these weeks together and trying to reach the ultimate goal, and one of us trying to win, and this type of event.”
“You know, Ben won the 1000, you know, Fritz won the 1000, you know, I’ve been the finalist in a 1000, so we’re all flirting with the top of the game. We’ve just got to get over the line,” Tiafoe concluded.
Andy Roddick remains the last man to win the US Open title back in 2003, nearly two decades ago.
This time at the French Open, it is only Shelton who is the top-seeded American starting his campaign on clay.
