Low budget horror film Occupation is shaping up to be a surprise hit at the box office, with strong numbers even in its second weekend.
The film earned about $22 million from more than 2,600 theaters in North America during its second weekend.
Over the Memorial Day holiday period, it is expected to reach about $28.2 million.
What makes this even more unusual is that the film outperformed its opening weekend. It was up about 30 percent, which almost never happens for horror films in wide release, as they usually drop after the first weekend.
So far, Occupation has grossed around $58.5 million in North America and around $74 million worldwide.
All this success came from a very small production budget of less than $1 million. But the film is directed by YouTube creator Curry Barker and produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster led by Jason Blum.
Experts say this kind of jump in the second weekend is very rare as they believe that strong word of mouth and positive audience response helps the film grow rather than slow down.
The story follows a young man whose life changes after a strange romantic arrangement leads to dark and disturbing events.
The film also receives good viewing figures and is especially popular among younger viewers in cinemas.
