Crystal Palace vs Rayo Vallecano captures the spirit of the UEFA Conference League like no other match in the competition’s history. Both clubs have only played in Europe once before – the Eagles in the 1998/99 Intertoto Cup, Los Franjirrojos in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup – and neutrals will have no trouble getting behind either.

UEFA Conference League Final 2026: Preview
In their 102-year history, Rayo have won nothing but a handful of campaigns. In fact, this UECL final is the first final they have reached any competition. And they’re here under a rookie coach who should be long gone. Inigo Perez, then one of Andoni Iraola’s assistants, was supposed to follow him to Bournemouth four years ago but was not given a work permit. Instead, he was handed the reins when Iraola’s replacement was fired.
To describe Iraola as a tough act to follow would be an understatement, but Perez already ranks alongside his great former mentor in Valleca’s pantheon. He will be out on his own if Rayo secure the title on Wednesday.
There are parallels with Palace, who won their first major title 12 months ago, in their 119th year. Oliver Glasner is distinctly Iraola-esque in his talent for doing more with less by developing players in a clearly defined system that suits them, and a year on from that momentous FA Cup triumph, the Austrian is on the verge of leading the club to a third piece of major silverware in his final act.
Palace took time to adapt to the European stage and their 10th place in the league stage necessitated a play-off for a place in the knockouts. However, a statement win over Fiorentina has put them to rest. With nine goals, Ismaila Sarr is the Conference League’s top scorer, while Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta are being pursued by Europe’s biggest clubs.
Rayo’s journey to the final has been quieter, partly due to the team as a whole sharing the scoring burden, which suits Perez just fine. With four goals, Alemao is El Matagigantes’ top scorer in the competition, with the Brazilian No.9 ably assisted by veteran midfielders Alvaro Garcia and Isi Palazon.
Although this is Palace’s first European final, Glasner won the Europa League with Frankfurt and guided the Eagles to FA Cup and Community Shield glory by masterminding wins over Man City and Liverpool. Rayo have never competed in a final of any kind before, but they have impressed in big games this season, holding Barcelona and Real Madrid to draws and beating both Villarreal and Atletico. For both clubs, the UECL title is their only way back to Europe next season.
