US Soccer star Gio Reyna did more than just mark the team’s 4-1 victory with a sweet goal; he announced his wife’s pregnancy.
Reyna, 23, scored a trivela goal – a goal scored with the outside of a player’s foot – in the 98th minute, then made his announcement during his celebration. He first held his ears to celebrate and was bullied by his teammates.
After doing so, he scooped up the ball and tucked it under his shirt, sucking on his thumb, something soccer players have done to announce their spouse’s pregnancy.

“My wife is pregnant,” Reyna said after the game, according to The Athletic.
“I’ve known for a few months now,” Reyna said, “so I was waiting for the perfect time (to announce the pregnancy). And that’s how it felt.”
While Reyna knew, the public found out for the first time during his celebration. He said his parents, Claudio and Danielle, both former U.S. international soccer players, and his wife, Chloe, wanted him to shoot more and “be a little selfish at times.”

His selfishness paid off as his trivela goal capped a triumphant start to the World Cup for the US team. Reyna said he didn’t make a conscious effort to score with the trivela technique and just did what felt right.
“These questions are always difficult for me,” Reyna said. “Honestly, when I play, I don’t really think. I just do what felt natural. I was in a good area and I got a good pass and I just saw the angle, the far post.”

American head coach Mauricio Pochettino was so fired up that he ran off the touchline to join Reyna’s goal celebration.
The U.S. will look to build on its strong start against Australia next Friday at 15 A.M.
