Looking for a different day?
A new NEW Strands puzzle appears at midnight every day for your time zone – meaning some people always play ‘today’s game’ while others play ‘yesterday’s’. If you’re looking for the Wednesday puzzle instead then click here: NEW Strand’s Hints and Answers for Wednesday, July 8 (Game #857).

Want more word-based fun? So check out my NYT Connections today and Quordle Today pages for tips and answers to these games, and Marc’s Wordle Today page for the original viral word game.

NEW Strands today (game #858) – the answers
The answers to today’s Strands, game #858, are…
- STICK
- SHINE
- SPOT
- LINER
- TINT
- BALM
- PLUM
- SPANGRAM: KISS AND MAKEUP
- My rating: Easy

The first sight of this theme made me think of the old weight loss mantra “a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips”, intended to warn dieters away from the short-term pleasure of a potato chip, as opposed to the lifelong joy of a slim physique.
I digress, as we weren’t looking for diets, but instead things that could be applied to the lips – of which there are many options.
Fortunately, despite the high number of words in the search, they were all short and easy to spot, with the biggest challenge coming from the 13-letter spangram.
Yesterday’s NYT Strand’s Answer (Wednesday, July 8, Game #857)
- SCAMP
- HELLWAY
- RAPSALLION
- WIPERS SNAPPER
- SPANGRAM: LITTLEDEVIL
