- Deezer launches AI music detector
- Scans your playlists to see how much of your music is AI slop
- It’s free and works on any streamer, not just Deezer
The annual Spotify Unwrapped has proven itself to be a masterclass in free marketing, with music lovers around the world posting on social media about, well, how much they use Spotify.
Now, in an iconic “hold my beer” move, Deezer has just launched something to give you a stat you’ll really want to brag about.
The streaming service has unveiled an online music detector it calls… the AI Music Detector (no fancy names here). It’s an online site that can link up to your favorite streaming service to quickly scan all of your playlists and tell you how much of your tracks are AI-generated. It literally takes a minute or so to do — although in TechRadar’s testing, Apple Music libraries took the longest.
Naturally, the goal is either to prove you’re not listening to some AI slop or, if you get a shock diagnosis, find out where these ‘songs’ are so you can treat the offensive condition. Deezer makes no secret of the fact that it would be happy if you wanted to transfer all those playlists after the scan, thereby signing yourself up to its service – and AI avoiders might find that ideal, since Deezer labels AI music (so you know what the offending 1% were, for example).
To find out if this AI music detector is any good, and hopefully brag about my clean AI-free record, I fired up the tool and linked it to my Spotify account.
Livin’ On A Prayer
I was already pretty convinced that I don’t listen to any AI music – it would be pretty hard to do that when 90% of your music taste is from the noughties – but as an outspoken anti-AI it bears checking.
It was really quick to pair the Free AI music checker from Deezer to my Spotify account and it took less than a minute to find my way around my libraries. Colleagues who have checked through other streaming services, notably Apple Music, report longer wait times (and even one crash before it worked), but for Spotify and Tidal, it was a breeze.
The Deezer tool quickly returned the score I expected: 0% AI. Nice. It even let me save a little badge for posting on social media.
Some people on TR’s team received an AI score of 1%, much to their chagrin, and this raised some questions. First: what song? They were not told, and it was much more difficult to weed out the errant noose than it would be if it were merely revealed. Perhaps the only way to find out is to transfer your playlist to Deezer, which the tool is very keen to help you…
Second, where was this AI trace found? It’s not 100% clear, but the Deezer tool is most likely only checking your custom ‘static’ playlists, rather than algorithmically generated ones that you have no control over (or even other people’s that you’ve saved).
While it will still leave some users with as many questions as answers (is the 1% lurking somewhere in your hyperpop playlist?), it’s great to see Deezer moving forward in its war against AI-generated music.
