- SpaceXAI has just launched a Grok add-in for Excel
- But OpenAI, Anthropic and others have already beaten Grok to it
- The latest Grok 4.5 model is said to be an Excel genius
SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) has launched Grok for Excel as an add-in that looks to put Grok’s conversational AI capabilities in a sidebar to help with formulas, charts, analytics and more.
While the add-on is technically free, it requires a paid account to use the features, with only the SuperGrok, SuperGrok Heavy, and Business/Enterprise plans able to handle tasks within the add-on.
SpaceXAI also refers to the add-on as a ‘free’ Microsoft Marketplace tool, loosely implying that its use is free despite current account restrictions.
Grok now also gets an Excel add-in
“Describe the result and Grok handles the syntax—averaging, sorting, and filling country like normal edits in the formula bar,” the company wrote in a post announcing the new tool.
Grok for Excel supports Excel 2019 or newer on Mac, as well as M365 and web versions, and connects to similar Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook add-ins. All Office add-ins promise to interact with documents, understand data, and create new content, but there are no autonomous agent functions, such as sending an email in Outlook.
Realistically, SpaceXAI is just the latest company to recognize that individual sectors need role-specific support, with funding emerging as one of the priorities. OpenAI already has ChatGPT for Excel, Anthropic has Claude for Excel, and of course Microsoft has its own Copilot add-on for paid plans.
The news comes just days after the company launched its latest Grok 4.5 model. “Grok Build is capable of building complex Excel models that involve research from the web, use of formulas with multiple sheets, and even leave stickies or notes for future reference,” the company wrote.
SpaceXAI also praised the model’s capabilities across Word and PowerPoint.
