- Google gives Gemini in Gmail access to your previous emails for tone and style customization
- Topic contextualization connections will also pull relevant information from the Workspace
- AI overviews in Gmail make it easier for you to find old emails faster
Google has confirmed a new update to Gmail’s Gemini-powered ‘Help me write’ feature, which allows AI to better match a user’s personal writing style.
A new ‘Tone and Style’ feature will analyze a user’s previous emails to mimic how they would normally write, while ‘Subject Contextualisation’ connects the Gmail tool with other Google Workspace apps to pull in relevant information with less friction.
With this update, the company hopes that AI-generated drafts will feel less generic and require less editing before sending, ultimately reducing the time it takes to send an email and freeing up employees to spend time on more meaningful, impactful tasks.
Gmail’s AI writer just got even better
In a blog post announcing the news, the company said the update is designed to reduce app switching and work with short prompts.
Some of the use cases the company cites include answering customer inquiries, sharing documents with colleagues and reporting to management.
While the feature is mostly marketed for workplace use, it’s not just being made available across Google Workspace plans. In addition to Business Starter/Standard/Plus and Enterprise Starter/Standard/Plus, it is also rolling out across Google AI Plus/Pro/Ultra and the AI Pro add-on for Education.
More broadly, it’s just another step in Google’s ongoing process to make Gemini more of a personal assistant.
Just a few weeks ago, the company also announced new AI overviews in the Gmail experience to make it easier for users to find information by asking questions in natural language instead of having to filter out emails by sender or date.
At the same time, these AI overviews were also extended across Google Drive to make it easier to find information across all content.
