- An APK teardown reveals that Gemini for Mac can become an agent assistant
- The tool could control your Mac, just like Claude Cowork and OpenAI’s planned superapp
- Claude is still leading where OpenAI is quiet and Google has yet to confirm details
Just weeks after Google launched a dedicated macOS app for Gemini to keep up with competition from OpenAI, the company is reportedly also now looking into adding even more new agent features.
A Gemini-powered ‘computing’ agent could be controlling parts of your Mac, just like Anthropic’s Claude Cowork feature.
Although the company has not yet stated any such plans, an Android Package Kit (APK) has been leaked by 9to5Google indicating that Gemini could organize files and perform other actions through the Mac app.

Is Google working on making the Gemini app more like Claude Cowork?
The app, which is still in its infancy, mostly just works as a chat interface with an Option + Space shortcut for quick access, similar to the ChatGPT app. A window sharing functionality also allows Gemini to see what’s on the screen for additional copy-and-paste-free context.
macOS’s screen access and accessibility permissions will likely give Gemini access to see what’s on the screen, control the mouse and keyboard, and interact with files directly on the machine. 9to5Google also meant that ties to Google Workspace apps could have Gemini convert unstructured files into Docs, Sheets, and Slides files.
Such an app wouldn’t be such a surprise, given that Google had opened up its Gemini 2.5 Computer Use model to developers last October, and rival companies were also experimenting in the same space.
While this would give Gemini a temporary advantage over ChatGPT, which is still a fairly basic app nearly two years after launch, it might not give Google the upper hand for too long.
OpenAI is said to be working on a super app that puts the powers of ChatGPT, Atlas and Codex into one interface. Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser described the proposed super app as “the primary experience where employees get things done,” but there have been no further announcements about progress on that project.
