Hearing of various applications seeking an early hearing on the suspension of sentence for the couples in the tweets case
ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday raised an objection to the various applications seeking early hearing of the suspension of sentence petitions of lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha in the controversial tweets case.
IHC Judge Muhammad Azam Khan heard the case.
Senior advocate Faisal Siddiqi appeared for Imaan and Chattha. Imaan’s mother, Dr. Shireen Mazari, Islamabad District Attorney Naeem Gujjar, a former president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and members of the civil society were also present in the courtroom.
Siddiqi informed the court that various applications had been filed for early fixation of reprieve pleas. He stated that the Supreme Court had already ordered the IHC to hear the case at the earliest and decide it within two weeks.
Noting that the court did not have the Supreme Court order before it, Justice Khan asked the lawyer to read the order. The lawyer replied that a copy of the Supreme Court order was attached to the miscellaneous application.
The judge noted that the order specifically stated that the matter should be decided within two weeks of receipt of the certified copy, adding that the court was yet to receive the certified order.
“How could the miscellaneous application be filed if the confirmed order of the Supreme Court was not available?” he asked. He also asked the lawyer if he was in possession of the certified copy.
Siddiqi replied in the affirmative and informed the court that he also provided the copy to the bench.
