- Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently available for pre-order
- The standard edition of the game costs $79.99 / £69.99
- Most of those we polled said the price was too high
With Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders live right now, there has been plenty of discussion about the game’s price.
Two versions of the game are available: a standard edition that costs $79.99 / £69.99 / AU$129.95 and an upgraded Ultimate Edition that offers some digital bonus content for $99.99 / £89.99 / AU$159.95.
In my eyes, it is quite a reasonable price. The game has taken over a decade to develop and is estimated to have a massive budget, leading some analysts to suggest that prices could start at as much as $100 / £100 / AU$200 before being made official.
In the US, it’s $10 more expensive than most major games, which generally cost $69.99. In the UK it is actually the same price as most other releases with e.g Ghost of Yotei or Stellar Blade also costs £69.99.
Still, according to a poll we ran with TechRadar readers, some fans are disappointed, especially given the fact that physical versions of GTA 6 will not actually contain a proper disc, but rather a printed download code.
Most people think GTA 6 costs too much
We took to our nearly 400,000 member strong WhatsApp channel to find out what our readers think and after 459 responses, the results are pretty interesting.
Overall, the majority (59%) of responses said so GTA 6 is priced too high. Of this group, 68% declared that they would not pursue the game – pledging that “Rockstar just lost a sale” – while 32% admitted that they would buy the game anyway, even if they thought it was too much.
Meanwhile, 41% were keen to get a pre-order locked in, choosing the option saying they will definitely “be there day one”. This means that overall, 59% said they would buy the game, although they expressed concern about the price.
This leaves a significant minority who have apparently been completely turned off. We will have to wait and see if this caveat is reflected in the official sales figures when they are finally published.
