- A fourth season is already in development
Marvel has finally confirmed when X-Men 97 season 2 is released: Wednesday 1 July.
Announced in a press release and on the cartoon giant’s social channels yesterday (May 27), the highly rated animated show will return to Disney+ in just over a month’s time. And to whet the appetite of the fans X-Men 97In the next chapter, Marvel also released an absolute banger of a trailer for the upcoming season, which you can watch below:
Look at
It’s been over two years since the X-Men’s last TV project – a sequel to the fan-favorite cartoon from the 90s X-Men: The Animated Seriesno less – hit our screens. So I wouldn’t be surprised if you struggle to remember what happened in X-Men 97s debut season and how its finale sets up the storylines teased in the trailer above.
Fear not, dear reader, because Marvel, Disney and I are here to help you. First check my X-Men 97 season 1 ending explained article to remind yourself where things ended last time. When you’re done, read Season 2’s brief story synopsis below, courtesy of Marvel and its parent company.
“X-Men 97 season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of the X-Men, split and thrown across different eras of time as they struggle to navigate their journey home,” reads the plot synopsis. “Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious enemies and new strains of mutant intolerance are rising in the wake of the X-Men.”
New season, new release schedule
X-Men 97 Season 2’s official launch date and first teaser aren’t the only things we’ve learned recently about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) adjacent TV series.
In an Entertainment Weekly article published ahead of the aforementioned revelations, executive producer Larry Houston confirmed that the Marvel Phase 6 show will run for at least four seasons. We already knew the show had been renewed for a third season, but this is the first time anyone has acknowledged that a fourth is in active development.
In addition, Houston announced that starting with the series’ next installment, new seasons will drop on Disney+, also known as one of the best streaming services, every year. “The [Marvel] I want everybody to know that it’s only going to be a year between seasons, not two and a quarter years,” he said. “It’s going to be one year to the next and one year to the next. [after that].”
That’s good news, right? On the surface, yes. Releasing seasons annually is the way things used to work before the advent of streaming, so it’s great to hear that the wait for a new edition of X-Men 97 will not be significant.
That said, I hope it doesn’t fall foul of the same criticisms that have been leveled at another animated show in Invincible.
After a nearly three-year wait between its first and second seasons, Amazon is now releasing new seasons of the R-rated Prime Video TV Original every year. That is to say, amazingly, parts of the show’s fanbase have been unimpressed by what they believe is a decline in the quality of its animation, with some theorizing that the annual turnaround of new installments is actively hurting the final product.
With X-Men 97 set to follow in Invincible’s footsteps, will it fall foul of the same problem? For a show loved by millions, and one that has a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes critical score, it would be a great shame if one of the best Marvel TV shows goes the same way as its Amazon counterpart. Here’s hoping it can avoid such negativity as it moves toward an annual release schedule.
