KARACHI: The mercury touched 42 degrees Celsius in the metropolis on Sunday, while the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said the sea breeze was likely to be restored by evening.

The Met department on Monday warned of a further increase in heat intensity. The department also said there was no chance of rain in Karachi.

The latest update came after the city remained in the grip of hot weather on Saturday, with the maximum temperature recorded at 38.5°C.

The PMD had warned on Saturday that temperatures could rise to 40°C on Sunday and rise further to 41°C on Monday, while heat wave conditions were expected to last till May 3.

PMD deputy director Anjum Nazir Zaigham had urged the public to take precautions to protect the elderly, children, valuables and animals, and advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure, especially during the afternoon rush hour.

He had also said that westerly winds were expected to affect the region after this phase, which would bring some relief and temporarily reduce the intensity of the heat.

However, he warned that the wider outlook for May and June remained severe, with intense heat waves likely across parts of Sindh, southern Punjab and Balochistan as temperatures were expected to remain above normal.
