Thick black smoke is seen near MetLife Stadium, site of the FIFA World Cup final.
It raises concerns that the venue is on fire. But officials confirm there is no fire at the stadium.
The smoke came from an extensive two-alarm fire that originated in a storage facility located on Washington Avenue in Carlstadt, a small community located less than three miles from the New York Jets and Giants football stadiums.
Local police were alerted to the fire at 9:50 a.m. ET. The fire department dispatched to the scene included the Wallington Engine Co. 202, popularly known as “The Hotshots”. It is currently reported that the fire is under control and no injuries have yet been reported.
Images circulated on social media made it appear from certain angles that smoke was rising from the 82,500-seat stadium.
The venue is set to host 8 matches, including the final. The first FIFA World Cup match is scheduled for June 13 between Brazil and Morocco from Group C.
Recently, the authorities have installed a natural grass field in the stadium.
