Microsoft Outlook down? Email problems are affecting users around the world – here’s what we know

Refresh

Welcome to our coverage of this outage – not long ago we saw large increases in reports of crash tracker DownDetector, with Microsoft Outlook affected.

As you can see – that’s a big increase in reports of crashes on DownDetector for Microsoft Outlook…

The official Azure status page has confirmed that there is an issue and it is being investigated.

Users “may experience intermittent problems signing in to Outlook.com,” the company says, and may also “experience intermittent login errors, including ‘too many requests’ errors or unexpected log-outs. In addition, affected users may include, but are not limited to, iOS users.”

We must say that the latest update from Microsoft does not exactly inspire confidence.

As it continues, outage reports continue to rise on DownDetector – although things are leveling off a bit.

Microsoft has updated its slightly vague and unhelpful message from earlier with a slightly more confident sounding post.

“We are seeing specific errors related to authentication key errors,” it said. “We are working to determine the underlying cause to determine our next remedial steps.”

Interestingly, the outage seems limited to only Microsoft Outlook, suggesting that it is a problem directly related to the email program.

It’s been 40 minutes since an update from Microsoft – although reports of outages seem to be leveling off, it’s still quite a long time.

We’ve finally got an update from Microsoft – looks like this could be a longer-lasting gremlin than expected…

Things have gone quiet again – we’re still seeing a good amount of outage reports on DownDetector, but nothing from Microsoft yet.

Finally – we may have the end in sight, as confirmed by a new update on the Microsoft service health status page!

Reports also seem to be declining on DownDetector, so that could be bad news for anyone looking to avoid emails for a little longer.

Well, it’s a turn-up for the books – Microsoft has admitted that its previous fix didn’t work as expected.

Progress! Finally, Microsoft thinks it may have found the problem, after several hours of struggle.

Microsoft believes it has solved the problem!

And with that we see reports of crashes on DownDetector dropping, so that should (hopefully) be the end of it.
