NDMA warns after Tarbela outlets are opened

Advised people to stay away from waterways and river channels during periods of high flow

ISLAMABAD:

The NDMA on Friday warned of an expected increase in water flow in the Indus River after the spillways of the Tarbela Dam were opened.

According to the NDMA, release of water from the drains is expected to significantly increase river flows in downstream areas along the Indus. The authority urged the public to avoid recreational and tourism activities along the river and warned that strong currents could pose serious risks.

It also advised people to stay away from waterways and river channels during periods of high flow.

The NDMA said higher water flows are particularly expected in the low-lying areas along the Indus River, especially in Layyah, Bhakkar and Mianwali districts.

It attributed the increase in river discharge to rapidly melting glaciers caused by rising temperatures, combined with rainfall in the upper catchments.

The authority said it is continuously monitoring the evolving situation, conducting advance risk assessments and ensuring timely dissemination of necessary information to relevant departments and the public to minimize potential dangers.
