- The districts has been canceled after one season on Netflix
- According to reports, the decision was made due to the high cost of producing sci-fi shows
- Despite this result, The districts was well received by critics and fans
Another day, another Netflix cancellation. Unfortunately, the top streaming service has gained a reputation for canceling our favorite shows and a new sci-fi thrillerthe districts, is the latest to be removed.
If you are surprised by this decision, you are not alone. The districts has performed well, receiving a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 97% after a month on the streamer.
I had assumed it would come back based on this, but it seems it hasn’t been successful enough to warrant another outing. That combined with the great cast, funny premise, and the fact that Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers were attached, making it seemingly easy to get back for round two.
So let’s dive into why this happened.
Why we’re saying goodbye to The Boroughs

According to The Hollywood Reporter: “Part of the problem here, says a source THRis that sci-fi is expensive. Another piece is definitely the Duffers taking their talents to Paramount. (The districts wouldn’t have followed through, but sometimes breakups are hard.)”
Cost is clearly a factor, but so is rival streaming service Paramount+. Still, this feels like a disappointing decision, especially since Netflix recently canceled The Lincoln Lawyer, and they also got three big shows in 2025.
The good news is that The districts is still worth seeing. You may be put off trying it given the news of the cancellation, but the eight episodes of Season 1 deserve your love anyway. With a great cast, including Bill Pullman and Geena Davis, and an intriguing supernatural threat, it’s definitely one of the best Netflix shows in recent months.
