NEW Connections today (game #1056) – the answers
The answers to today’s Connections, game #1056, are…
- BLUE: US CABINET DEPARTMENTS EDUCATION, INTERIOR, STATE, TAX
- GREEN: Staged performances BALLET, MUSICAL, OPERA, PLAY
- YELLOW: CLAIRVOYANT EXTRASENSORY, MENTAL, PSYCHIC, TELEPATHIC
- PURPLE: STARTS WITH NEWSPAPER NAMES GLOBE ROTTER, HERALDRY, POST-IT, BOARD
- My rating: Hard
- My score: Perfect
POST-IT was the big odd-sounding tile-out in this game, and my first thought was that the word note could also apply to MUSICAL.
But after failing to see anything else, I gave up on this thread and decided to POST-IT it on a wall somewhere I could forget about it.
I managed to connect the blue group of US CABINET DEPARTMENTS, not through any knowledge of the US government, but because they all sounded very official and serious.
Fortunately, this opened up the rest of the game and made it easier to see STAGED PERFORMANCES and CLAIRVOYANT.
With three groups down I was put out of my misery and although STARTING WITH NEWSPAPER NAMES is a clever connection, Globe and Herald are uncommon newspaper titles in the UK so I can forgive myself for missing it.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different degree of difficulty: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough, and purple usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t need to solve the last one, as you’ll be able to answer it by a process of elimination. Also, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.
It’s a bit more involved than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to let you beat yourself up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other puns that can hide the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
