- Another new poster Lantern is published online
- Its tagline has set DC comic fans on edge for three major reasons
- The HBO Max show still doesn’t have a confirmed release date
DC Studios has released the first official poster for its Lantern TV show – and its tagline has created three major talking points among fans.
Posted online yesterday (April 23), the artwork shows its two leads – Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan – standing in the shadow of a giant Lantern Corps. ring. One sheet is rounded off with an ominous-sounding slogan, ‘Only one can wear the ring’, as well as the series’ official logo and a reminder that Lantern will premiere on HBO Max in August.

Little else has been revealed publicly about its plot or cast, but we were finally treated to some actual footage from the live-action show in the form of an official teaser in early March. You can read more about that and my theories on the upcoming program in my Lantern trailer breakdown article.
Why has the slogan on Lanterns’ first poster ignited three debates among fans?
But back to the poster and more specifically the possible intent behind its tagline. In fact, its reveal has sparked three major discussions among fans — one of which centers on the potential death of a major character.
Before we get into the spoiler-based talk, let’s take a look at the other two talks, starting with the fact that many have been confused by its tagline.
The notion that “only one can wear the ring” has confused longtime readers who claim that along with 7,199 other Green Lanterns—including another Earth-based one in Guy Gardner, whom we’ve met in Superman and Peacemaker season 2 – out there that this is a completely misleading statement.
But as others have rightly pointed out, the tagline in this case only specifically refers to Jordan and Stewart. Actually from what Lantern‘ teaser tells us Stewart will replace Jordan as Earth’s second Green Lantern. This means that Jordan will have to pass on his Lantern Corps. call Stewart, which is what the slogan actually alludes to.
The other big talking point is more entertaining.
Featuring taglines for the first three DCU films — Supermanplus the upcoming Supergirl and Clayface — everything starts with the word “see,” fans had begun joking that every DCU Chapter One production motto will also begin with that word. Unfortunately for those hoping to turn this into a meme, Lantern‘ slogan puts an end to these wishes. Obviously, everyone has forgotten Creature Commandosthe first DCU project that actually came out didn’t have a tagline with the word “see” at the start…
But I digress. As I alluded to, one of these online conversations is centered around the possible death of a key person in the Lantern. So this is your only caveat: potentially major spoilers follow immediately, so don’t scroll past this point if you’re wary of what might happen.
As I mentioned, Lantern makes no secret that Stewart wants to succeed Jordan. It could happen gracefully, with Jordan eventually trusting Stewart to take his place.
On the other hand, Stewart can also become the guardian of Jordan’s ring if the latter dies Lantern. Whether it’s by sacrificing himself to save the day or by being killed by the show’s Big Bad, Jordan needs to shuffle off his mortal coil, especially since Stewart will appear in Superman successor The man of tomorrowwill he make it Lantern alive.
It is of course entirely possible Lantern could throw a bigger curveball at us and watch Jordan become Parallax. It’s the supervillain alias he adopted in the 90s era of Green Lantern comics after Jordan’s hometown was destroyed and he went insane. That would make for a major plot twist, especially if Stewart is forced to kill his mentor to save the day — a blindside moment that Redditors LastCryptographer173 and AdmiralFoxythePirate think could realistically happen.
Either way, I guess DC’s marketing team wasn’t expecting it Lantern‘ tagline to spark as many conversations as it has. But hey, any publicity is good publicity, so I’m sure the comics giant will welcome any kind of talk to keep it in the spotlight.
