Pulisic rested, Freeman rises as USA beat Australia to reach World Cup knockout stage

The US men’s national team is set for the knockout round of the 2026 World Cup after Australia fell in Seattle on Friday, June 19.

The USMNT defeated Australia 2-0 to take a strong hold as it topped Group D.

After Australian defender Cameron Burgess’ gift, a dazzling run from Folarin Balogun put the USA up 1-0 in the 11th minute.

Then came Freeman, who hit the net in the 43rd minute when he first took advantage of the deflected shot and headed the ball into the net.

The win is even more noteworthy due to the fact that the USMNT rose to the occasion without forward Christian Pulisic, who was unable to play with a calf injury.

The win marks the first time the USMNT has won straight games at a World Cup since 1930.

And the funny thing is that it was also the last time the USA scored two or more goals in the first half of straight World Cup games.

Is Australia out of WC after losing to USMNT?

Right now, the Socceroos are not out of the race to reach the knockout rounds.

But it all hinges on their final group game against Paraguay; if they win the match, it would give them six points, enough breathing room to keep their hopes alive.

Australia will play Paraguay in the final Group D match on 26 June 2026.
