Punjab expands Section 144, retains ban on outdoor drone flights

Outdoor drone flight restrictions remained enforced across the province for another 30 days, the release said

The Punjab government extended the enforcement of Section 144 across the province and maintains a complete ban on outdoor drone flying, a notification issued on Sunday said.

According to the Home Office, the restriction on flying drones in open space had been extended for another 30 days and would remain in effect until May 25. The measure was originally introduced for safety reasons.

“Given the overall security situation, it is imperative to ensure the safety of people and the protection of installations and buildings against any potential threat or unwanted activity,” the statement said.

The order emphasized that the restrictions were extended in “the larger interest of public safety, security, peace and tranquility”, adding that there were “sufficient reasons” to continue enforcement under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 1898, to prevent any disturbance of public peace and protect life and property.

However, the ban does not apply to limited use of small drones during indoor events. The authorities specified that small drones may be used inside wedding halls and tents for cover.

“Safe use of such drones in a limited and demarcated indoor area is the responsibility of the organizer,” the release said.

The restriction also exempted the use of drones by intelligence and law enforcement agencies. The Punjab government directed the administration and the police to ensure strict implementation of the order during the enforcement period.
