Queen Camilla receives rare honor revived after centuries

As a monarch, King Charles holds many prestigious honors and has been immortalized in history in various art forms and collectibles.

For the first time in centuries, a Queen consort is being honored after a new ‘Queen Camilla’ coin was approved by The Royal Mint. This is a surprising event as only the reigning monarch of the time is featured on the coin instead of their spouses.

Although this is not a historical first, but it will be the first British coin to recognize the Queen Consort since the Tudors.

Elizabeth II had wanted her successor, Charles III, to have Camilla bear the title of Queen Consort and not ‘The Queen’. However, it was one of the first changes Charles had made to drop ‘Consort’ in Camilla’s honorifics when speaking in public.

The new coin will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the crown and features a Tudor rose on one side and then the crowned royal cyphers of both King Charles and Queen Camilla on the other.

The design is inspired by King Henry VIII, who had the initials of the first three wives on the crown coins.

A coin expert who goes by ‘Christopher Collects’ said that as collectors they are always looking for coins that “tell a story beyond their face value”.

“This publication combines royal history, Tudor inspiration and a truly rare constitutional moment.”
