Rain-related incidents claim 16 lives

ISLAMABAD:

At least 16 people have lost their lives and 38 have been injured across the country in rain- and flood-related incidents over the past week.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emerged as the worst affected province.

The NDMA, in its latest situation report covering the period from June 26 to July 2, said the casualties were caused by heavy monsoon rains, collapsing houses and flash floods.

Among the 16 victims were five men, four women and seven children, while the injured included 14 men, four women and 20 children. The authority said house collapses and flash floods were the main causes of death during the reporting period.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa suffered the highest human toll with nine deaths and 26 injured, making it the province worst hit by the ongoing monsoon season.

Punjab reported four killed and nine injured. The deceased included a man, a woman and two children, while the injured included three men, a woman and five children.

In Balochistan, three people were killed, including two women and a child, while three others sustained injuries.

According to the NDMA report, no deaths or injuries were reported from Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir or Islamabad during the reporting period.

The authority said it continues to monitor the developing weather situation as monsoon rains continue in various parts of the country.
