LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 around airports and Pakistan Air Force bases across the province, the provincial home ministry said on Thursday.

According to a notice issued by the Ministry of the Interior dated May 19, certain activities – including pigeon hunting, use of laser light and meat throwing [sadqa] for consumption by carnivorous birds around air bases and airports β€” can “pose a serious risk to flight operations and aviation assets.”

The notification added that there was sufficient cause to proceed under Section 144 as an “immediate prevention of disturbance of public peace, safety of life and public property and tranquillity”.

“Birds are attracted to meat and dirt, which causes serious dangers for aircraft and passengers. Similarly, the use of laser lights by shops, squares and citizens within airport boundaries also affects aircraft operations, which is why the ban has been introduced,” writes the Ministry of the Interior on X.

The restrictions will remain in force across Punjab for 30 days, the release said. The orders will also apply within the boundaries of commercial airports operating throughout the province.

According to the notification, the Home Secretary – under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) – banned the activities in and around the funnel area of all PAF bases and commercial airports across the province within a radius of 13 km with immediate effect.
