KARACHI:

A most wanted terrorist associated with the outlawed Sindhudesh Revolutionary Army (SRA) was arrested during a joint intelligence-based operation conducted by the Sindh Rangers and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) on Monday, officials said, adding that weapons and explosive material were recovered from his possession.

The suspect, identified as Abdul Jabbar Sarki, son of Ghulam Rasool, was arrested at Rangers check post near Raees Goth on Hub River Road while traveling from Quetta to Karachi, according to an official statement. Authorities said detonators, ball bearings, weapons and explosive material were seized during the operation.

Officials said the arrested militant was allegedly planning terror activities at sensitive locations in Karachi in coordination with other operatives. Authorities added that he had been in touch from abroad with SRA commander Sajjad Shah, who is accused of orchestrating various sabotage activities in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.

According to investigators, Sarki joined Sajjad Shah’s group in 2020 and later got involved in militant activities associated with the banned organization.

Police officials claimed that the suspect along with an accomplice carried out a grenade attack on a Rangers check post near the National Highway’s Manzil Pump in June 2020. The attack injured two passers-by and partially damaged the Rangers post.

Authorities further claimed that the militant had also conducted reconnaissance of an Independence Day stall in Gulshan-e-Hadeed ahead of the August 14 celebrations as part of a planned terrorist activity.

Officials said the suspect’s name is listed in the CTD Red Book as a most wanted terrorist. The arrested militant along with the recovered weapons and explosive material have been handed over to the CTD police for further prosecution.
