Sindh to introduce 50 double decker, 500 electric buses

Sharjeel Memon says new buses will improve public transport as land for depots is identified

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Saturday that the government was inducting 50 double-decker buses and 500 new electric (EV) buses in the transport system, which will bring significant improvement in the province’s public transport.

On Saturday, the senior minister chaired a key meeting on land allocation for bus depots and the transport plan for various public transport projects. The meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Karachi Development Authority (KDA) Director General Asif Jan Siddiqui, Deputy Commissioners of Malir, Korangi, Karachi Central and Karachi West, and senior officials of relevant departments.

Officials briefed the minister on land requirements for public transport projects, including parking and operational facilities for buses. The availability of government land in various districts, proposed locations and future needs were reviewed to identify suitable locations for bus depots.

On the occasion, Memon directed the officials to immediately complete the identification and allotment of suitable land for bus depots. He also directed all deputy commissioners to identify vacant government land in their respective districts for setting up modern bus depots for mass transit projects.

“The timely availability of proper depots and operational infrastructure is essential for the success of these projects,” he said, adding that all relevant institutions should complete land identification and other necessary arrangements at the earliest through mutual coordination.

The senior minister affirmed the Sindh government’s commitment to provide citizens with modern, comfortable, world-class eco-friendly travel facilities. He said the government aims to put the new buses on the roads for public service as soon as possible and ongoing projects in the public transport sector will bring about revolutionary changes in the province’s transport system.
