Worried about keeping your wine at the optimum temperature this summer – and equally concerned about style? Smeg has launched a new range of under-the-counter wine coolers, filling the gap between its built-in and column wine coolers. These have capacity for 21 and 78 bottles respectively; the new under-table coolers have space for 38 bottles.
There are three models in the new range: Classic, which is in stainless steel and available in a choice of right or left-hand opening, and Linea, which is right-handed and comes in matt Neptune Grey. All three models are available now.
As you’d expect from Smeg (which makes several of the best coffee machines we’ve tested over the years), these are premium products with stylish designs, although the themes here are classic and professional rather than the bright colors of Smeg’s instantly recognizable smaller appliances and fridges, such as the toaster, juicer, kettle and my food processor I have in my kitchen. These coolers are designed to complement the company’s Professional Collection and Linea Neptune Gray Collection.
SMEG under-counter wine coolers: key features and prices
All three models have the same functions. They are lit internally by LEDs and have anti-UV glass to prevent the sun from damaging your Sauvignon, and the air inside is filtered through activated charcoal. The compressor is low-vibration, which SMEG says is necessary to prevent prolonged vibration that compromises wine quality.
The coolers support bottles of various sizes and have telescopic slides for easy extraction. There are three removable and two fixed shelves, all made of wood.
Temperature control is via an integrated touch display and there are two temperature zones that cater for temperatures from 41F to 68F / 5C to 20C.
As you might expect, expect the new models to be quite expensive: some US dealers have them with a price tag of $3,999, while in the UK I see a listed MSRP of £2,929. That’s about AU$5,497.
