Karachi police on Tuesday arrested a suspect in the honor killing of a newly married couple in Malir Saudabad.
A statement from the Korangi police spokesman said the primary suspect was arrested within the limits of Sachal Police Station, adding that the motorcyclist who accompanied him during the attack remained at large.
The incident took place a day ago when the couple and others were traveling in a vehicle in the Malir area. The couple were traveling in a car from a court to Hyderabad at the time of the attack, with their wedding planned after Eid.
According to the first information report, three unidentified gunmen intercepted the vehicle and opened fire. CCTV footage reportedly captured the attack, showing armed bikers firing at the car as its occupants tried to escape.
The couple was killed, while the assailants fled the scene immediately afterwards. The case was registered under Sections 302, 109 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
According to the police spokesperson’s statement, the suspect confessed that his sister was engaged to another person in exchange for Rs 350,000. When she instead married another man of her own free will, the previous man demanded the money back and made it conditional on the woman being killed.
