Chuck Russell, the director behind it The mask, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Scorpion Kinghas died at the age of 74.
He was found unresponsive at his San Diego-area home Wednesday, and his death was confirmed by his attorney; according to TMZhad local fire crews respond to a report of an unconscious man.
Russell began his career writing screenplays and working as a production manager and assistant director on independent films.
He met longtime collaborator Frank Darabont while serving as executive producer on Hell nightand went on to write the screenplay for the Dennis Quaid thriller Dreamscape.
He made his directorial debut with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriorswhich rebooted the franchise, outshone its two predecessors and helped launch Patricia Arquette’s career.
He followed that up with the cult favorite remake The blob.
Russell’s biggest commercial hit came in 1994 with The maskwhich introduced Cameron Diaz in her first film role and made Jim Carrey a household name, the film received an Oscar nomination for visual effects.
He continued to direct major studio pictures throughout the following decade, including Eraser with Arnold Schwarzenegger and The Scorpion Kingwhich gave Dwayne Johnson his first starring role.
After an extended hiatus from film production, Russell returned to co-direct I am angry with John Travolta, the Indian action film Jungleeand Paradise City with Bruce Willis and Travolta.
In 2024, he directed a remake of Witchboardnarrator Black at the time, his approach to genre filmmaking centered on character: “We have to humanize these things, whether it’s action or comedy or drama. You have to get into the heads of your performers. You have to get their actual personality into their performances.”
