Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed General Aamer Raza as the Commander-in-Chief of the National Strategic Command. He previously served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Pakistan Army.
In a statement, the prime minister’s office said the premier promoted Gen Raza from the rank of lieutenant general to the rank of “four-star general” while appointing him to the coveted post.
“The Prime Minister congratulated General Aamer Raza, HI(M), SBt on his promotion and appointment and wished him the best for assuming this important responsibility,” the statement added.
The new title was established after the Pakistan Army, Air Force and Navy (Amendment) Bill 2025 was passed. Field Marshal Asim Munir was also appointed Chief of Defense Forces under the same legislation.
The Commander-in-Chief of the National Strategic Command post was created after the abolition of the Chairman’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) – General Shamshad Mirza was the last to hold the post.
The law states that the prime minister can appoint the chief from among serving Pakistan Army generals for a three-year term, based on the recommendation of the Chief of Army Staff-Chief of Defense Forces.
